ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø supports Uluru statement
The University of Canberra (ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø) supports the Uluru Statement from the Heart, recognising its centrality to true recognition and reconciliation with all First Nations peoples. The Voice to Parliament is one component of the Uluru Statement and the referendum to establish this Voice is a critical step for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. We recognise the historic significance of this referendum.
Our university purpose is captured in the Ngunnawal word Galambany which expresses our commitment to working together to empower, connect and share knowledge with our people, cultures, and places. Through our Connected strategy, ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø has committed to enhancing the way we connect with and serve communities, including Indigenous communities.
We are committed to principles of working to reduce Indigenous disadvantage; constructive dialogue to improve outcomes for Indigenous people and communities; and transparent, evidence-based approaches to empower communities to achieve change. We recognise that holistic solutions are required to address complex challenges that face Indigenous communities and the critical importance of partnerships in addressing disadvantage.
In recognition of these commitments, the Vice-Chancellor, University Executive and Senior Leadership of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø affirm their support for the Uluru Statement from the Heart and for a ‘Yes’ vote in the Voice to Parliament referendum.
We also want to make clear that we value freedom of enquiry and free expression of ideas as fundamental to our university. In the spirit of these principles, we will encourage and facilitate dialogue on the Voice, ensuring respect for community and recognising that a range of positions will be held in relation to it. We will be seeking to engage our community and audiences across Australia in discussions about the Voice to build understanding.
