The unit bridges and extends the classroom knowledge and the real working environments. It provides an extended intensive period where realistic and comprehensive understanding of the complexity of professional settings can be experienced. Students are required to extend their engagement in everyday workplace activity where they can examine theories and practices, and refine their own developing understanding of professional practice. The internship extension is a tangible link between the university and the workplace and benefits graduate employability.

Skills development

The goal of the IS Internship (Extended) unit is to provide extended work experience that is of value to the organisation and also augments the student's formal IT education. The IT industry, including the professional body and employers, clearly recognises the advantage of students gaining extended practical experience to complement their formal education before entering the profession. Students will use the extended internship opportunity to apply the theories and concepts they have learnt at University to real-life situations. Students will be able to use this extended internship experience to reflect on their field of study, as well as develop their professional and personal skills. Each student is expected to complete 120 hours of industry placement over the duration of the unit. The timetable is negotiated between the stduent and the intern hosting organisation.

Prerequisites

Must have passed 48 credit points in the course and have permission from the Unit Convener.
