Introduction

In this unit students will finalise their clinical skill development in the ASAR nominated ultrasound examinations commensurate with a beginning practitioner and demonstrate fitness to practice as an ASAR Accredited Medical Sonographer. Students also will further develop their understanding of the principles of medico-legal practice, medical ethics and professional interpersonal skills and relationships, and will integrate theoretical components of medical ultrasound with their sonographic practice. Students will also develop skills in self-critical autonomous practice within their professional role. Quality control and risk management are also addressed within all areas of ultrasound practice.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Perform the skills and competencies as outlined by the ASAR competency standards for the entry level sonographer;
2. Critique topical issues in relation to their own practice and exercise reflective and critical analytical skills to investigate, analyse and synthesise complex information;
3. Demonstrate strong interpersonal and inter-professional relationships and evaluate their role in providing support and enabling informed choices;
4. Integrate safe ergonomic principles and workplace safety regulations into clinical practice; and
5. Critically analyse the quality control and risk management procedures and policies impacting on professional practice.

Assumed knowledge

Ultrasound physical principles and scanning skills that would be gained from the successful completion of the units 10159 Ultrasound Physics and Instrumentation, 10160 Introduction to Ultrasound and in the units 10161 Abdominal Ultrasound, 10163 Vascular and Postoperative Ultrasound and 10164 Paediatric and Superficial Parts Ultrasound. Students must have a clinical sonography training position or have access to a clinical sonography training site.

Special assessment requirements

In order to achieve a passing grade in this unit, all assessment items must be satisfactorily attempted and submitted. Students must achieve the satisfactory completion of all assessment items and must also demonstrate competency in their clinical skills assessment in 5 of the 6 areas outlined in the ASAR Standards for the Accreditation of Sonographer Courses ( p.19.). Evidence must also be presented in Smartabase that the required clinical hours have been met.

Supplementary assessment

According to the University's Assessment Procedures, supplementary assessment will only be offered to students who satisfy the following eligibility criteria:

A student has been allocated a final mark in the unit of at least 45% and less than 50% inclusive, and/or are within 5% of satisfying a hurdle assessment; AND
The unit undertaken in the final teaching period is the last and only unit required to meet all academic course requirements to enable conferral of a degree.

This eligibility criteria is applicable to any teaching period commencing after 1 April 2024.

Moderation

Assessment items will be moderated to ensure consistency and equity. Moderation of assessment items will include all failed submissions and a selection of other graded assessment items in each cohort in adherence with the Faculty of Health guidelines.

Participation requirements

Students must have a concurrent clinical placement or training position in order to complete this unit.

Active engagement in all online modules enhances your learning and is strongly advised.

Unless specifically stated in the unit outline, there is no mandatory attendance requirement. However, you may elect to attend timetabled activities, as they allow you to ask 'real time' questions to develop your understanding for the relevant assessment tasks.

Students are expected to actively contribute to online, topic based discussions throughout the semester.

Online tutorials / meetings and assessments may be held out of hours to facilitate attendance.

Required IT skills

This unit involves online activities in real time using the Virtual Room in your 黑料吃瓜网Learn teaching site. The Virtual Room allows you to communicate in real time with your lecturer and other students. To participate verbally, rather than just typing, you will need a microphone. For best audio quality we recommend a microphone and speaker headset. For more information and to test your computer, go to the Virtual Room in your 黑料吃瓜网Learn/Cnvas site and 'Join Course Room'. This will trigger a tutorial to help familiarise you with the functionality of the virtual room.

Work placement, internships or practicums

This unit involves a work integrated learning clinical placement or workplace experience.

Students must adhere to University policy during WIL experiences, including the Student Conduct Rules 2018, the WIL Policy and WIL Procedure, and the Assessment Policy and Assessment Procedure.

This unit has pre-placement requirements (e.g. Working with Vulnerable People registration, immunisations, recording of relevant details in InPlace etc), which must be completed prior to commencement of your placement; refer to Placement Requirements.

The unit also involves workplace assessments and therefore, additional student responsibilities are required in addition to those described in this section. Work-place learning requires strict adherence to professional practice principles and ethics. Client/patient and site confidentiality must always be maintained, including for assessment items. Any ultrasound related images or materials presented must be de-identified. Failure to remove identification will result in a zero mark being awarded.
