This unit introduces Landscape Architectural Design. Landscape planning & design brings together the diverse range of knowledge and skills of landscape architects to address social & ecological problems on sites that range from the urban to the regional, the natural & the artificial, and at the different scales that suit them. In design studio students develop these skills and synthesise their learning from all their subjects, by applying them to real-world briefs, simulating professional practice. As students progress through the sequence of landscape design studios, their degree of difficulty & scope of projects increases and greater professional quality is expected of design project outcomes.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Read a site and understand concepts of site specificity;
2. Undertake basic site analysis and generate a design suited to a site;
3. Schematically manipulate topography to suit landscape design; and
4. Draw conventional landscape drawings such as site & analysis plans to appropriate scales.

Skills development

In this studio the skills students gained in first year B.E. Studios (or equivalent) will be used to interrogating the design problem, annalyse the landscape and and  manipulate that site to appropriately develop a landsacpe scheme. At the completion of this studio students will demonstrate an understanding of how layout, scale, form and materiality are used to address the function, establish the landscape character and human experience. 

Prerequisites

Students must have completed 24 credit points of ABB201 Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (Honours) OR ABB001 Bachelor of the Built Environment (Architecture) OR ABB002 Bachelor of the Built Environment (Interior Architecture).
