This unit introduces students to the theory of social justice, gaining knowledge and understanding of a variety of theoretical perspectives relating to historical and current issues including systemic inequality, diversity, and inclusion. We will study challenges with which those working in the justice field are often confronted, analyse various approaches for making change, and discuss the complexities of addressing such challenges in a globalised world.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Identify and critique the fundamental principles, values, and notions of social justice, including concepts of diversity and difference;
2. Critically reflect on laws, policies and systems which create and continue social injustices;
3. Examine differences between the intention of policies and laws, and how those policies and laws practically affect persons/communities; and
4. Formulate proposals for addressing injustice at the individual and societal level.
