Increase your options with a career in finance and banking
In this course, you’ll be introduced to the theory and practice of the worlds of commerce, finance and banking. A highly practical degree, you’ll develop knowledge and techniques in risk management and credit assessment, and will learn how to manage risks in financial services firms.
You’ll also explore topics including shares, debentures, derivatives and discounted cash flows, and will study methods to price a range of financial instruments. You’ll be involved in a range of Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experiences linking directly to the finance and banking industries, and will graduate with sound knowledge of commerce and a breadth of professional skills which will ensure a successful career, whichever path you choose.

Work Integrated Learning
On campus
The Bachelor of Commerce (Finance and Banking) integrates theory with real-world practice through ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø's Work Integrated Learning (WIL) opportunities, designed to prepare students for their future careers. ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø provides diverse WIL options, including industry case studies, guest speakers, internships, work placements, industry projects, competitions, exhibitions, study tours, virtual experiences and more.
Through the WIL experiences across the course, you’ll acquire the necessary professional skills consistent with industry expectations for your future career in the worlds of finance, banking and commerce. Previous Finance and Banking students have undertaken internships and cadetships with a diverse array of leading partner organisations in both public and private sectors.
The course culminates in a capstone project, which aims to integrate what you’ve learned across your degree and prepare you for the transition to either successful future employment or further studies.
Online
Students who choose to study online can access virtual WIL opportunities. This content includes on-demand guest lectures, industry case studies and industry projects.
Internships and the International Business Study Tour options require either in-person placement hours in a business or on an overseas study tour and are not offered wholly online.
Students studying both face-to-face and online will have access to support services including Careers ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, who are available to assist with employment pathways and personal development.

Open Electives - Must pass 24 credit points from the following
- - Must pass 24 credit points from anywhere in the University, as a breadth major, a breadth minor and/or as individual units.
- - From 2024, units 10158, 10236, 11166, 11167 and 11168 have been replaced with new BGL Internship units.
- 1. Students must pass a minimum of 1 unit from Part A. Two units may be chosen from Part A or one from Part A and one from Part B.
- 2. Students who undertook two units listed in the current Part B section prior to 2024 can still count the units towards their course. Students from 2024 need to select at least 1 unit from Part A.
- 3. Unit 11572 Accounting Internship Preparation is only available to students undertaking an Accounting major.
- Credit Points: Students who want to do more than 6 credit points from this list may count them towards Open Electives.
- International Exchange: Students may also choose to undertake units at an international institution, subject to approval by the Program Director.
- Unit 11232 Credit Analysis and Lending has been closed. From 2024 students should enrol into 12089 Credit Analysis and Lending.
